Professional Experience

Richard predominantly practises criminal law. He is experienced in defending and prosecuting in all areas, including frauds, drug importation and supply, offences of violence, sexual offences, and wildlife and environmental offences.

Noteworthy / reported cases:

  • Regina (on the application of White) v Barking Magistrates’ Court [2004] EWHC 417 (judicial review on legitimate expectation);
  • Iqbal v Director of Public Prosecutions [2004] EWHC 2567 (appeal by way of case stated re admissibility of pre-caution comments, material averment in charge, business documents exception to hearsay rule);
  • Regina v Paine [2003] EWCA Crim 3137, CA (appeal against sentence for burglary).
  • Junior counsel in R v C: 6 handed drug importation case at Newcastle Crown Court.
  • Trial counsel in R v Ahmed at Snaresbrook Crown Court: s.18 GBH – defendant facing mandatory life under s.109 PCC(S)A 2000.
  • Trial counsel in R v Morris, Clare and Finken – prosecution of defendants charged with offences under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (killing a wild buzzard) and offences related to the unlawful storing of pesticides. Richard has frequently been put forward as an advocate by the RSPB to prosecuting authorities to advise and represent at trial in a number of subsequent cases.

  • Winner of the Gluckstein Prize for Advocacy – Lincoln’s Inn.
