Professional Experience

Jonathan was called to the Bar in 1996 after a successful career in banking and finance. He practices exclusively in crime.

His practice is now predominantly defence based in the higher courts though he continues to prosecute on behalf of the CPS, probation service and Customs & Excise. Recent and present cases include aggravated arson, violent crimes (wounding with intent, assaults occasioning actual bodily harm, armed robbery), drugs offences (possession with intent to supply, conspiracy to supply and production), serious public order offences (including violent disorder and affray), sexual offences (rape and sexual assaults) and dishonesty offences (including large scale conspiracy to defraud, possession and/or use of false documents). Jonathan also has a wide experience of confiscation proceedings having been involved in contested applications under the new Proceeds of Crime Act and under the old Drug Trafficking and Criminal Justice Acts.

Jonathan has experience of dealing with the particularly vulnerable or anxious. He has represented young children facing serious charges and a number of people suffering from serious mental health problems (often involving issues of fitness to plead). He regularly deals with young witnesses and has had recent experience of cross-examining a 7 year old victim in a sexual case and a 9 year old witness in a serious assault case.

Jonathan’s practice is mainly based in London and the South East but he is able and willing to accept instructions in other areas. In addition he is happy to attend conferences at solicitors’ offices, in chambers or in prison. Jonathan has always been at the forefront of the use of computer technology in his practice and now regularly uses e-mail to send advices and opinions and to receive instructions.
